Presidents Letter

I Couldn’t Be More Proud …

As our community reopens and we embark on the road to recovery, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the past 16 months and recognize the incredible work of our entire team. Their resolve, dedication and sacrifice is beyond admirable, and unbelievable work has been accomplished. If there was one way to sum up my feelings, it would be to say thank you, and that I couldn’t be more proud.

From setting up our first COVID-19 testing clinic last April, to releasing a COVID patient this March who had been in our care for 110 days, the last year has been among the most challenging on record for those working in health care. Nurses, doctors, hospital staff, emergency responders and so many more have selflessly stepped up to provide compassionate care amid intense uncertainty. You can read more on page 6 about what it was like to work through the pandemic from the perspective of two of our oncology providers.

At the same time, I would also like to say how grateful and humbled we are by the tremendous support shown by our community over the past year. These difficult times have brought our community closer together and shown the best in us all. We’ve also found new ways of working together to benefit our neighbors (see story on page 38), and that’s what is most important.

Now, with more than half of Americans fully vaccinated, the outlook ahead is promising. As we begin to turn the corner on this pandemic, I also wanted to take a moment to recognize some milestones our hospital has reached along the way. At the core of our success is our caring and dedicated staff. Thanks to their tireless efforts and continued excellence, Sentara RMH recently was named one of IBM Watson’s Top 100 Hospitals in 2021, and has been included as one of IBM Watson’s Top 50 Cardiovascular Hospitals for two consecutive years.

Additionally, we recently launched robotic surgery at Sentara RMH (see story on page 19); we adapted procedures to continue to provide vital behavioral health services despite the pandemic (see story on page 29); and we are excited to continue to help people heal, and allow them to get back to doing the things they enjoy and love. At the end of the day, our mission is to improve health every day. We cannot do that without our incredible team.

We are honored to be your community hospital, and we are grateful for the enduring support shown to our team during these difficult times. We are truly privileged to serve such an incredibly tight-knit community.
