Thankful for the Health Care We Provide

By the time you’re reading this, we will be just days away from Thanksgiving, and a question often heard at this time of year is: “What are you thankful for?”

As president of Sentara RMH, I have a number of reasons to be thankful. First is our tremendous team of physicians, nurses, clinicians and support staff who make this hospital a safe, compassionate place to work and to seek care. Our culture of safety puts the highest premium on the safe, effective delivery of health care—every day, and in every patient encounter. In this magazine you can read about two important ways our team works to ensure patient safety—in the article on medication safety and in Dr. Andrea Styron’s article on anesthesia safety.

I’m also thankful for the Sentara RMH heart program. Our comprehensive program can help patients just like Mr. Paul McFarland, who required lifesaving cardiac services ranging from interventional cardiology and heart surgery to electrophysiology and cardiac rehab. We should all be thankful that these services are readily available and provided by highly skilled and compassionate providers, right here in our own community.

The Sentara OrthoJoint® Center continues to see a growing number of patients who experience superb outcomes. I’m thankful that our expert team of orthopedic and sports medicine providers can help people like Renee Cleaver return to active, full lives after years of debilitating joint pain.

Speaking of orthopedics, I’m proud to announce that George Zimmerman, DO, FAOAO, has just joined Sentara Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Specialists. Dr. Zimmerman is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon who specializes in surgeries of the hip and knee. He will be providing anterior hip replacement surgery, an important expansion of our orthopedic service line that has not been available at Sentara RMH until now. Watch for more information about Dr. Zimmerman on our Facebook page and in our spring issue ofSentara RMH Magazine.

Last but certainly not least, I’m thankful for all of the people who trust Sentara RMH with their healthcare needs. Our patients are the sole reason we are here, and it’s an honor and a privilege to serve this community.

Best wishes for a happy, healthy Thanksgiving and holiday season!
