Thanks for a Great First Year!

Come January, I’ll be reaching the conclusion of my first year as president of Sentara RMH Medical Center. It has been an engaging and fulfilling year, and one that has confirmed for me that this is truly a terrific place to work.

It can be challenging being “the new person on the block,” getting to know so many new people, learning new processes and procedures, becoming familiar with the culture of a new organization, and setting forth my own goals and objectives as the new hospital president. And all of this in addition to my wife and I getting our two boys settled into a new neighborhood with new schools. I’m pleased to say our relocation to Harrisonburg has been made easier by the warm and friendly welcome we’ve received from the many new colleagues and friends we’ve made at Sentara RMH and in the community at large. I want to thank everyone for their exceptionally kind reception.

When I accepted this position, I already knew Sentara RMH was a strong, vibrant hospital, with highly skilled physicians and clinicians offering the latest in advanced medical procedures and technologies. After spending some time here, however, I’ve been struck by just how exceptional our clinical capabilities are. For example, I would happily match our cardiology program against any in the state, and our impressively comprehensive orthopedic service line is of the highest quality. The same can also be said of so many of the services we offer.

Sentara strives for top-10 percent performance. Our quality scores and our safety ratings are strong, thanks to the hard work and dedication of staff members throughout the organization. As I’ve gotten to know our staff members, I have seen a group of people striving every day to carry out the Sentara Commitments of always keeping patients and visitors safe; always treating them with dignity, respect and compassion; always listening and responding; always keeping them informed and involved in their care; and always working collaboratively across multiple disciplines and departments to provide safe, high-quality, compassionate care to our patients and their families.

I didn’t come to Sentara RMH to “fix” anything; the hospital already had a stellar record of providing safe, high-quality care. My role is to assume the reins of my predecessors and to continue guiding Sentara RMH on its never-ending journey of always providing safe and compassionate care to those who need us. It takes the entire team working together to achieve these levels of efficiency, safety and quality, and I sincerely thank every member of the Sentara RMH team for what they do to advance our mission of improving health every day.

This community has every reason to be proud of its hospital. In this issue of Sentara RMH Magazine, you will read about how the hospital’s staff is engaging with the community—saving and improving lives, and offering help and healing to those who need it. You’ll also read in our Foundation section how the hospital in turn receives much-needed, greatly appreciated support from generous community donors.

I’m proud to be a part of this hospital and a part of this community. Together we can achieve even greater accomplishments.

And as always, thank you for choosing Sentara RMH for your healthcare needs!
