Tips for a Healthy Prostate

Guys, take care of your prostate by doing the following:

• Eat a healthy diet full of fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grains. Limit your intake of alcohol, caffeine, red meat, salt and sugar.

• Stay active—exercise or lead an active lifestyle to maintain a healthy weight. Although the relationship between exercise and prostate health is still being studied, research indicates that the more active men are, the less likely they are to experience benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or enlarged prostate.

• See your doctor regularly.

• Beginning at age 50, have regular prostate examinations and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) tests. If you are African American or have two or more members of your family with prostate cancer, you may be at higher risk—in that case, examinations should begin at age 45.

• Know your family history and tell your doctor—if you have a brother or father with prostate cancer, your risk for developing the disease doubles.

• Don’t smoke.
